Tattoo Aftercare - Complete Guide
Congratulations on your new tattoo! For the first 24-48 hours, your tattoo is basically an open wound, so treat it like one. The more you take care of hygiene and aftercare, the faster it heals and the less chance of colour dropping out. Listen to your body and get enough sleep.
Did we cover your tattoo with film?
It's a special film that stays on for 3-5 days. If it's holding well and you're not having issues, leave it on. 7 days maximum.
After removing, wash the skin with water or antibacterial soap (Protex).
No film on your tattoo?
Sometimes film isn't suitable. The tattoo is too big, too small, or in a spot where film doesn't work. No problem. Get Protex and wash and moisturise the tattoo twice a day.
What to use
If the tattoo itches and feels dry, moisturise it. We recommend:
- Coconut oil - natural, hydrating, antibacterial.
- Unscented shea butter - great alternative.
- Tattoo-specific cream - Bepanthen for tattoos, or specialised balms.
Rub creams into the skin - don't apply thick layers, don't suffocate the tattoo.
DO NOT!
- Exercise - skip it for 5-7 days.
- Pools, sea, sauna, tanning beds, direct sun - banned for the first 3 weeks.
- You can go outside, but keep the tattoo covered (long sleeves, pants, socks).
- Never wrap the tattoo under anything.
- Don't wear tight synthetic clothing - causes friction, slows healing.
- Wash whenever you sweat.
- Scratching and peeling scabs - never. You'll pull the colour out.
Your skin needs to breathe. Never wrap it, skip synthetics, wash it every time you sweat.
How long does healing take?
Full skin regeneration takes 2 months. Until then, the tattoo is not fully healed. It may look "cloudy" or faded during the process - don't worry, that's normal. The colour will come back.
Long-term care
- SPF 50+ in the sun - UV radiation is the biggest enemy of tattoos. Always, for life.
- Hydrate - regular moisturising keeps colours vibrant.
- Touch-ups - after 2-6 months you can book a touch-up if needed. At HIDN, the first touch-up is free.
When to pay attention
Mild redness, tenderness, and light peeling are normal. Call a doctor if:
- Severe swelling that gets worse after 3+ days
- Pus or an unpleasant smell
- Fever
- Red streaks radiating from the tattoo (sign of infection)
